BAC Long Studio  


This part of the studio starts on the 9th of February and continues through the 20th.  It consists of travel by way of Miami to Havana and environs to see and document things first hand with sketch books, still and video photography, and personal journals.

Get there, get oriented

Check in for flight starting no later than 9:30 AM.  Fly to Havana early afternoon.  Clear immigration and customs, transfer to ‘Hotel Park View’ in the Walls District.  After checking in, walk down to the Punta Fortress and then along the harborfront Malecón to the Plaza de Armas.

“El Campo”

Walk across La Habana Vieja to the ferry terminal to cross the harbor to Casablanca.  Take the noon Hershey train to Matanzas by way of Villa Camilo Cienfuegos (Hershey Town) and then to Matanzas.  Get picked up to return to Havana by motor coach.

Walk along Calle San Lazaro, catching sight of the Malecón and the Solymar apartments to the Callejon de Hamel for the Sunday Rhumba.  After the Rhumba, check out the Fragua Martiana, and Plaza de Martires.  Return by way of Calle Neptuno crossing Calzada Galiano and on down San Rafael to Parque Central, the Capitolio, and the Prado y Neptuno Cafe

Explore and sketch the Punta fortress and Castillo de Real Fuerza, then take the ferry to Casablanca again to walk uphill to the Cristo de La Habana and the Weather Station and then over to La Cabaña fortress and the Tres Reyes del Morro Castle.  Head down to the waterside bastion to finish the day at the waterfront bar and cafe.

17th to 19th Century Havana

Walk by way of Parque Central and Obispo to the Plaza de Armas for initial sketches, then on to the Plaza de Catedral. Plaza de San Francisco, and Plaza Vieja for more sketching.  Walk up to the Plaza de Cristo.  In the afternoon, check out the major landmarks of the walls district, the Ballet School (Centro de Oficios), Centro Gallego, Centro Asturiano, Capitolio, and Parque de Fraternidad.  From there go down Calle Cárdenas to the Central railroad station and the Tallapiedra power station.  Walk along the inner harbor to see the Alameda de Paula and ‘Dos Hermanos,’ on of the bars Hemingway frequented

First Half 20th Century Havana

Walk along Calle Neptuno to Calzada Infanta and on to La Rampa.  Visit and sketch the Hotel Nacional, the Seguro Medico building, Habana Libre Hotel, and Copelia Ice Cream park.  Lunch, perhaps, at La Roca, a mob-era restaurant behind Copelia.  In the afternoon, walk through El Vedado to see the Republican Squares, the John Lennon Statue, the Casa de Amistad, and the Cementerio de Colon.  Find a place for dinner in the ‘23 y 12’ district.

Thursday,  February 16, 2012

Take a motor coach to La Regla by way of the Via Blanca.  See and sketch Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Regla and the Regla Museum.  Continue on the Cojímar, Hemingway’s fishing port, for lunch at La Terraza.  After lunch, continue on the Vivero Organiponico Alamar and the Alamar Cultural Center (home of Cuba’s Hip Hop).  Return to La Habana by way of the Villa Panamericana, Estadio Panamericana, and Unidad Camilo Cienfuegos.

Take a motor coach to Nuevo Vedado to document residential work by Romañach, Porro, and Martinez.  Continue on to the Maqueta de la Habana at the Grupo por Desarollo de la Habana.After lunch drive on the schools of Art at ISA.  Complete the day with a stop by CUJAE

Go to the beach by motorcoach until mid afternoon.  Return to the hotel to change and attend the opening reception of the Sixth Havana Urban Design Charrette at the Hostal Conde de Villanueva in La Habana Vieja.  Meet architects and urban designers from Cuba and other countries.
