Designing Together - A Parallel Studio about Living in the Américas

Right before the mid term review, we had a special Saturday session for the Day of the Dead. Luis gave us Octavio Paz’s essay for a reading assignment, and we remembered our experiences at the Fiesta de San Miguel in La Manzanilla. Each of us did something to entice our artists, architects, writers, and engineers on the other side to come to the studio to inspire us for the final push.
El Dia De Los Muertos
Trea made some masks and created a pair of dancing calacas
Kelly made two versions of pan de muerto. It was really good
Opie made calacas out of mesh, wire, and some of the green stuff Bender was using for his ‘nature’ stroke.
Bond brought cervesa and Jicama (tasty compliments to the pan de muerto), and he made a lighting model of one part of the Tlalapan Chapel
John did some papeles picados to celebrate Orozco and the hand Orozco lost while making fireworks
Aki did the core of an ara for Don Luisito. The shadowbox is organized on the ground floor plan of the 1947 house. The finished “Ara de Don Luisito” has marigolds from Francine’s garden, one of Andrew’s dice, Aki’s shadowbox, Kelly’s pan de muerto, Opie’s calaca, Bender’s cervesa, and a cutting taken from a jade plant in the magic garden next to the 1947 house. All this in the hope that Don Luisito will be at the mid term review!
Andrew made a pair of dice with a calavera on each face. The number of openings describing the calavera correspond to the dots on regular dice
Bender, Steve, Opie, Luis, and Maria also made masks. All of them are fastened to the door to the studio now.
Sarah’s calaca looks surprised to be here.
