Designing Together - A Parallel Studio about Living in the Américas
Shortly after we returned from the trip, Luis demonstrated the technique for creating gestural models to convey concepts

The overall design problem is a plan for the Turnpike Air Rights parcel 7 and its adjacent parcels now used for on-grade parking.
For the BAC’s Longstudieros, the first step is to develop a scheme for one dwelling. This scheme reflects the students’ reaction to the course readings and the research done on the trip to the Sierra del Tigre, Guadalajara, and Mexico City.
The method by which that design is investigated is to create a series of gestural models. Model materials are selected to convey important concepts for the dwelling, what Luis calls ‘strokes.’ Students assemble the materials into sketch models which they then criticize and edit into a new set of models.
The sketch / criticize / edit / sketch process starts with 40 models, then 20, then ten, five, and one which is translated into the architectural design of the dwelling
Bond and Aki check out Kelly’s first 40 models, which are based on her four strokes - compression, hidden, filter, and spirit
Checking out one of Steve’s pieces
Steve’s five are the basis of the next 20
Aki’s first 40 and the five of Bender that made the first cut

Checking out Bond’s models. As the number of models decreased, the scale and level of detail increased.
