Preparation
BAC Students do the following sets of directed research before traveling to Mexico for on-site investigation:
September 4
Write a paragraph about personal preconceptions of Mexico and its culture.
Create a toy object in the spirit of the Mexican toys studied in studio.
September 8
Read two chapters of Octavio Paz: Hijos de la Malinche and From independence to revolution.
Review the 19th and 20th century history of Mexico, including notes on the Cristera conflict, Cardenas, and agrarian reform
Write a paragraph summarizing thoughts on Mexico’s history
September 18
Look at some of the work of artists surrounding the architecture of Luis Barragán
Joseph Albers, Chucho Reyes, Mathias Goeritz, Armando Salas Portugal...
Read the Emilio Ambasz text for the MOMA mongraphs of 1976.
Read Barragán’s Pritzker Prize acceptance speech
Create a Color / sculptural study reflecting thoughts on influences on Barragán
September 11
Read two of Juan Rulfo’s short stories: Diles que no me maten, and Luvina. Study Rulfo’s photographs.
Taste samples of Mexican Candy
Create artwork in response to Juan Rulfo and Mexican Candy interpretation
September 15
Read from Jose Clemente Orozco’s autobiography for a different perspective of the Revolution: chapters 3, 4, and 5
Read Paz’s Dialectic of Solitude.
Taste a variety of Chili peppers
Create artwork in response to Orozco and Chili peppers

Virtual walk-through of Barragan’s work according to travel itinerary 1
Guadalajara, Ferdinand Bac: Jardin Enchantes, Rental Architecture
Create an artwork responding to Romance and emotional architecture
September 25
Virtual walk-through of Barragan’s work according to travel itinerary 2
Landscape development, study of specific areas. Study of issues like: golden proportions, transitional/interstitial spaces, timing, lighting, public/ private space relations, circulation...
